About this journey
This seven day agricultural journey provides an in depth introduction to farming systems across the central Kenya highlands and the Great Rift Valley. It is designed for farmers, students, cooperatives, institutions, agricultural professionals and leisure travellers who want more time for practical learning than a short farm tour can provide. The first day introduces tea, coffee, vegetables, flowers or fruit production in the highlands near Nairobi before continuing to Nyeri. Three nights in Nyeri allow the programme to separate dairy and horticulture from fruit, nuts, mixed cropping and post harvest handling. This makes the visits more useful and avoids repeating the same general farm content. The fourth day moves to Naivasha for aquaponics, floriculture and commercial horticulture. Visitors learn how fish and plant production can operate within one managed water system, then compare this with greenhouse flower production and the requirements of local and international supply chains. The fifth day explores dairy, poultry and horticulture around Nakuru before a scenic and geological visit to Menengai Crater. The sixth day returns to Naivasha for a different programme centred on smallholder vegetables, fruit, organic methods, irrigation and post harvest handling. The final morning includes one last farm visit before the return to Nairobi. The journey is primarily a Kenya Farm and Agro Tour. Menengai Crater and any optional birdwatching are supporting nature experiences. Every farm visit depends on host confirmation, season, production schedules, weather, biosecurity, food hygiene and animal welfare. The exact order may change to preserve safety, realistic travel times and useful learning.

Nairobi Highlands Tea, Coffee, Vegetables and Flowers
Meet the professional driver guide after breakfast at the confirmed Nairobi collection point and travel into the productive highlands near Limuru and Kiambu. Begin at a selected tea or coffee farm. Receive an introduction to the crop, local growing conditions and annual production cycle. Walk through the fields to discuss nursery material, planting, pruning, soil fertility, shade, irrigation, pest management and harvesting. Travel to Nyeri in the late afternoon, check into the accommodation and have dinner.
Nyeri Dairy Production and Horticulture
After breakfast, visit a selected modern dairy farm. Learn about breed selection, animal housing, fodder production, feed formulation, breeding, animal health, milking, milk hygiene, cooling and farm records. The host may also discuss manure management, biogas, cooperative services and milk marketing. Continue to a horticulture enterprise producing vegetables, herbs or leafy crops. Walk through fields and greenhouses to examine planting cycles, seedling management, soil or growing media, irrigation, crop nutrition, pest control and harvesting. Professional groups may request discussion of production costs, labour, quality standards and market planning. Enjoy a farm prepared lunch or another suitable local meal. Spend the afternoon on a second horticulture unit or in a structured discussion with farmers and technical staff. Return to the Nyeri accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Nyeri Fruit, Nut and Mixed Crop Farming
Begin with breakfast and visit a selected fruit, nut or mixed crop enterprise. Possible crops include avocado, banana, macadamia nut, passion fruit and other locally appropriate fruits. Learn about orchard establishment, planting distances, pruning, soil fertility, pollination, water management, pest control and harvest timing. Follow the produce beyond harvest through sorting, grading, storage, packaging and preparation for local or export markets. Where facilities exist, the host may demonstrate simple value addition or explain farmer group marketing. A farm prepared lunch can feature ingredients from the surrounding area. The afternoon may include a complementary flower, vegetable or mixed farm visit so travellers can compare orchard systems with shorter cycle crops. Conclude with a discussion of crop diversification, risk management, production records and market access. Return to the Nyeri accommodation for the third night.
Naivasha Aquaponics, Floriculture and Commercial Horticulture
Leave Nyeri after breakfast and travel toward Naivasha. Begin the agricultural programme at a confirmed aquaponics enterprise. Learn how fish tanks, filtration, water circulation and plant beds are connected. The host explains fish health, feeding, water quality, nutrient recovery, plant nutrition, disease prevention, energy requirements and system records. Continue to a commercial flower or horticulture farm. After a biosecurity briefing, enter approved greenhouse and post harvest areas. Nakuru Dairy, Poultry, Horticulture and Menengai Crater
After breakfast, travel to selected agricultural enterprises in the Nakuru region. Start with a dairy farm or mixed livestock enterprise to discuss housing, fodder, feeding, animal health, milking, cooling and records. Continue to a poultry unit to learn about brooding, housing, feeding, flock health, egg collection, manure handling and market planning. Visit a horticulture farm producing vegetables or other locally suitable crops. Examine soil management, irrigation, crop protection, harvesting and local market supply. Enjoy a farm prepared lunch or another suitable meal arranged on the route. In the afternoon, visit Menengai Crater. Use established viewpoints to observe the vast volcanic landscape and learn how geology, soils, water and settlement influence the surrounding agricultural region. Weather can affect visibility. Continue to the Nakuru accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Naivasha Smallholder Vegetables, Fruit and Organic Farming
Leave Nakuru after breakfast and return toward Naivasha for a programme that is different from the commercial visits on day four. Meet selected smallholder farmers producing vegetables, fruit or mixed crops for local markets. Learn about planting schedules, crop diversity, irrigation, composting, biological inputs, pest management, harvesting and household resource use. Discuss how small farms manage limited land, labour, water, market access and production risks. Where possible, compare direct sales, trader relationships, farmer groups and post harvest practices. A farm prepared lunch allows the group to connect production with food preparation and local food systems. The afternoon can include a complementary fish, poultry or fruit enterprise according to the confirmed hosts and learning goals. Continue to the Naivasha accommodation for dinner and the final overnight.
Morning Farm Visit and Return to Nairobi
After breakfast, make a final morning visit to a selected farm near Naivasha. The host may demonstrate poultry, vegetables, fruit, fish farming or another enterprise that complements the previous visits. Review sustainable practices, irrigation, production records, harvesting and post harvest handling. Use the closing discussion to compare the large commercial enterprises, mixed farms and smallholder systems visited during the journey. Travellers can identify methods that may be relevant to their own farms, studies, organisations or investment interests. Enjoy a light lunch and begin the return journey to Nairobi. Travel through the Great Rift Valley with comfort and photography stops when road conditions allow. The final transfer can end at a city hotel or the airport. An additional Nairobi night may be recommended for an early flight.
