About this journey
This six day journey presents a broad view of agriculture in central Kenya and the Rift Valley. It combines coffee or tea production, dairy farming, milk value addition, beekeeping, vegetable production, cereal farming, cheese making, agroforestry, flower production and community based mixed farming. The route begins in Nairobi with a prearranged coffee or tea farm visit in the nearby highlands. Travellers learn how crops are managed and, when the season and host allow, observe harvesting and processing before a tasting and farm prepared lunch. A conservation education visit at the Giraffe Centre is followed by travel to the Nyeri highlands. Nyeri introduces dairy production, milk handling, yoghurt and basic cheese processes, modern and traditional beekeeping, honey production and practical vegetable farming. The journey continues to Nanyuki for wheat and barley production, cheese making and a detailed look at agroforestry, composting, soil health, water conservation and climate resilient farming. The road then passes through Nyahururu for a scenic stop at Thomson Falls before descending into the Rift Valley. In Naivasha, visitors explore greenhouse and flower production, grading and export preparation. A lakeside evening can include an optional boat excursion. The final agricultural visit focuses on a community project that combines poultry, fish farming and other smallholder activities before returning to Nairobi. This programme is suitable for private travellers, farmers, cooperatives, students, universities, agribusiness teams and institutional delegations. The technical depth can be adjusted to the group. Farm access, production stages and supervised participation depend on season, weather, biosecurity, animal welfare, host permission and the confirmed operating schedule. The Giraffe Centre, Thomson Falls and Lake Naivasha add conservation and scenic experiences, but the standard programme is primarily an agricultural learning journey. A full wildlife safari in Lake Nakuru, the Maasai Mara, Amboseli or another park can be added as a separate extension.

Nairobi Highlands Farm Experience, Giraffe Centre and Nyeri
Meet the driver guide in Nairobi and travel to a confirmed coffee or tea farm in the nearby highlands. Begin with an introduction to the crop, local growing conditions and the work required throughout the production year. Walk through the fields to discuss planting material, soil care, pruning, crop nutrition, pest management and water use. When the season and host permit, observe or participate in supervised harvesting. A coffee programme may demonstrate pulping, fermentation, washing, drying, roasting and tasting. A tea programme may cover plucking, leaf handling and tasting. Enjoy a farm prepared lunch and use the session to ask questions about production costs, labour, quality, value addition and market access. Continue to the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi for a conservation education visit and close observation of giraffes from the visitor platform. Feeding may be available under centre rules. After the visit, travel through the central Kenya highlands to Nyeri for dinner and overnight.
Nyeri Dairy, Beekeeping and Vegetable Production
After breakfast, visit a selected dairy farm in the Nyeri highlands. The host explains breed choice, housing, animal welfare, fodder production, feeding, milking routines, milk hygiene, cooling, record keeping and manure management. Where the facilities and hygiene rules allow, observe milk handling and introductory value addition such as yoghurt or simple cheese production. Continue to an apiary project for an explanation of traditional and modern hives, colony management, protective equipment, bee forage, swarm control, honey harvesting, processing and packaging. Honey tasting may be included when safe and available. Travellers with serious insect allergies should disclose this before the programme. The final visit is a vegetable farm. Learn how farmers prepare nurseries, establish crops, schedule irrigation, rotate crops, manage soil fertility, reduce pests and diseases and prepare produce for sale. Walk through the plots to compare crops at different stages and discuss the challenges faced by small farms. Continue to Nanyuki for dinner and overnight.
Cereal Farming, Cheese Making and Sustainable Agriculture
Begin at a wheat and barley farm in the Nanyuki or wider Laikipia highlands. Discuss land preparation, seed selection, planting, soil fertility, crop monitoring, weed management, mechanisation, harvesting, drying, storage and the role of cereals in food and beverage industries. Field conditions vary with the farming calendar, so the host may also use machinery, stored grain or records to explain stages that are not visible on the travel date. Proceed to a dairy value addition enterprise for a cheese making session. Follow the process from milk selection and preparation through curd formation, cutting, heating, draining, shaping, maturation and storage. Access to processing rooms depends on hygiene rules. A tasting of available products may be included. Conclude at an agroforestry and sustainable farming initiative. Learn how trees can support crops and livestock, protect soil, improve water retention, provide fodder or fuel and strengthen farm resilience. The visit may also cover composting, organic manure, water harvesting, biodiversity and practical climate adaptation. Return to the Nanyuki area for dinner and overnight.
Nyahururu Scenery and Naivasha Flower Production
Leave Nanyuki after breakfast and travel toward Nyahururu through highland farming landscapes. Stop at Thomson Falls for photographs, a viewpoint visit and a short walk where weather and mobility allow. The guide explains the importance of highland water systems and the relationship between landscapes, farms and communities. Continue into the Rift Valley toward Naivasha. After lunch, visit a confirmed flower farm or horticulture enterprise. Learn about greenhouse management, plant propagation, irrigation, crop nutrition, harvesting, grading, packing, cold chain handling and preparation for export markets. Professional groups can request discussion of certification, environmental management, labour, logistics and market standards. Transfer to a lakeside lodge. The evening is free for rest, bird observation or an optional guided boat excursion when water and weather conditions are suitable. Boat costs are excluded unless the final quotation lists them as included.
Community Mixed Farming and Return to Nairobi
Visit a community farming project in the Naivasha region or another confirmed location along the route. The programme focuses on how smallholder households combine several activities to spread risk, improve food security and create more than one source of income. Learn about poultry housing, feeding, breeding, hygiene, disease prevention, egg collection and simple farm records. Continue to a fish farming section where available and discuss pond preparation, water quality, stocking, feeding, health management, harvesting and local marketing. Other activities may include vegetables, composting, water harvesting or small livestock according to the selected host. Share a closing discussion with farmers about enterprise selection, household labour, market access and lessons that visitors can adapt to their own studies or businesses. After lunch, drive to Nairobi and check into the final hotel. The evening is free for rest or an optional farewell meal.
Nairobi Departure or Optional Extension
After breakfast, review the main lessons from the journey and confirm onward arrangements. Depending on the departure time, an optional produce market, coffee shop, agricultural supplier or cultural visit may be arranged at additional cost. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or a selected Nairobi hotel. Travellers continuing to a wildlife extension can begin a separate route to Lake Nakuru National Park, the Maasai Mara, Amboseli National Park or another confirmed destination.
