Destination guide

Why visit Lake Nakuru National Park?

Lake Nakuru National Park is a compact Rift Valley destination known for rhino conservation, lake and escarpment scenery, acacia woodland and varied birdlife. Its manageable road network makes it useful for shorter safaris and for itineraries linking Nairobi, Naivasha and the Maasai Mara. The park is an important rhino sanctuary and supports both black and white rhinos, although sightings are never guaranteed. Other wildlife may include Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo, zebra, antelope, baboons, predators and many water and woodland birds. Flamingo numbers vary with lake levels, food conditions and movement between Rift Valley lakes, so the park should not be marketed as guaranteeing huge flamingo concentrations. Game drives can include lake viewpoints, woodland, open areas, Baboon Cliff and Makalia Falls when road conditions allow. A full day or one overnight stay is sufficient for many routes, while an extra night creates a slower pace and more time for birding and photography. Lake Nakuru combines especially well with Naivasha’s horticulture, lake and outdoor experiences. It can therefore form part of a farm-and-wildlife itinerary. Visitors should follow park rules, avoid approaching rhinos or other animals too closely and carry layers because mornings can be cool.
